History
Montalvan's Sales, Inc., is a family-owned and operated import/export wholesale business, owned by Marcos and Carmen Montalvan. Ethnic food products have been the mainstay of business. The Montalvan’s discovered a large Polynesian population living in southern California and throughout the western United States who preferred their native foods but had difficulty finding suppliers.

The company opened its doors in the garage of the Montalvan's home. As inventory was sold, they quickly reinvested in more products, and the business grew. Within a few months, business was strong enough to warrant a commercial facility. The Montalvan’s leased a small warehouse, but outgrew it quickly. They purchased a second, larger facility, before moving to their current location in Ontario, California.

Since 1991 Montalvan's Sales has been approved and licensed as an establishment of the U.S.D.A. The U.S.D.A. facility at Montalvan's Sales is equipped for the production of various meat cuts, cured beef, pork products, sausage and chorizo making. All finished goods meet U.S. Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) and/or U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) standards.

Product diversity has proven to be an important component of their success.

Although the Montalvan’s began with only one product, they now wholesale over 900 items. They offer a full range of canned meat products, fresh produce, spices, and special ceremonial items such as cured beef buckets. The Montalvan’s registered their own private labels including, "Polynesian Treasures," "Hellaby's," "La Verdadera," "La Nuestra,", “Riquitas” and "La Cocinita.

"As a distributor, Montalvan's Sales imports products by the container-load, handling shipping and documentation as well as negotiations for pricing, delivery terms, and communications. Early on, they established a policy of keeping stock on hand in order to fill their retailers' needs as quickly as possible. They maintain flexibility of packing which helps their smaller customers stay competitive.

Distribution of products now includes half a dozen western U.S. states as well as several island countries in the South Pacific. The company imports products from Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Samoa.
