Marcos and Carmen Montalvan immigrated to the United States over 45 years ago. Marcos immediately opened several small grocery shops in southern California. The stores were designed to sell typical Spanish roots and groceries considered daily staple items in Latin America.
Shortly after opening the Ontario, California store, several consumers from the islands of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa arrived in search of cassava, taro, tin fish and various other items that were not available at their local supermarkets. The lack of product and growing demand prompted the Montalvan's to visit Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia in search of suppliers. During her trip, Carmen carried a list of the top 50 items that were requested by the local U.S. clientele. After a successful visit, Carmen and Marcos decided to open a distribution company dedicated to "bringing the taste of home" to niche markets. In the couple's humble garage, Montalvan's Sales, Inc. was born.
Growth was inevitable. Within 3 years, the business outgrew the home garage, a storage facility, two warehouses, and the company's first USDA production facility. Corporate headquarter was established in Ontario, California. This building housed a new USDA plant and additional warehouse space. Expansion was necessary to store and produce the products that the customers need. In 1998 Montalvan's Sales Inc., Los Angeles Cash & Carry opened its doors to serve the greater downtown market. In 2005 the Hayward, California Distribution Center opened its doors to serve northern California's San Francisco Bay Area customers.
The Montalvan's were always interested in selling what they new best; Latin foods. Nonetheless, these plans were held back while the couple concentrated in growing their new found business. Finally, in 1999 the Montalvan's decided to embark on diversification into the Latin food distribution market. The addition of a new product line meant that the Montalvan's would have to invest in new facilities and new brands. Unrelenting, the couple expanded their product list from 90 to 900 items.
Products include a full range of canned meats, fresh produce, frozen pulps, pastries, soft drinks, snacks, spices, and household goods. In addition to representing leading brands, the company worked directly with farmers, brokers, and packing houses in producing items for the company's private labels: "Polynesian Treasures," "Hellaby's," "La Verdadera," "La Guanaquita", "Riquitas" and "La Nuestra."
Vendors from Costa Rica, Chile, Peru, Guatemala, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Samoa flock to the U.S. looking for solid companies to represent their homeland foods. When they walk-in to Montalvan's Sale, Inc. they find themselves surrounded by warm hospitality, a colorful ambiance, a showcase of products and a display of awards and recognitions.
Professionalism and service is the backbone on the company's success. The company is proud to boast that in the last 24 years it has protected its customers' interest by refusing to open their business to the public. Keeping a trusting relationship between the distributor and retailer is essential. Montalvan's Sales, Inc. publishes monthly pricelist updates, maintains uniform pricing strategies and passes on manufacturers' promotions at every opportunity. Company employees work hard at maintaining high customer service levels by processing orders within 48 hours, visiting customers regularly, and creating a fast response time to customer concerns.
Marcos' keen insight for opportunity and Carmen's charming personality coupled with old fashioned hard work have created the "American Dream".
